Azerbaijani FM says African challenges should be addressed diplomatically

Azerbaijan fully realizes the threats of the conflicts around the world, including Africa.

Azerbaijan welcomed the strengthening relationship between the UN and the African Union (AU) in the maintenance of international peace and security as well as fully supported South Africa’s draft resolutions over cooperation on peace and security, FM Elmar Mammadyarov announced in New York on January 12th, APA reports.

Mr. Mammadyarov mentioned that over the last decade the role of the AU has increased significantly and he said, Azerbaijan has developed its relations with this organization and its members.

He mentioned that as a country suffering from the territorial occupation, Azerbaijan fully realizes the threats of the conflicts around the world, including Africa.

The AU had made great efforts with regard to promote peace and security in its region, however, Mr. Mammadyarov added, challenges that Africa faces today can be better addressed through diplomatic ways.

"We have to admit that the challenges remain", he said adding it is critical that "we can’t prevent conflicts before they occur".

Mr. Mammadyarov also mentioned the vital role of women and gender perspectives on piece and security effectiveness.

"Efforts to find the solutions for the conflicts need to be continued", he added.

The SC meeting is still continuing. Mr Mammadyarov also met with delegations of some other SC members, as well as UN Security-General during the meeting.
