The overall cost of AzerSpace is AZN 163m.

Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technologies has declared readiness to sign a contract with one of the producers of rocket launchers to launch the first national telecommunication satellite AzerSpace.

Sources in the Ministry of Communication and Information Technologies said that the contract with French Airanespace to launch Azerspace will be signed in the ministry on November 5.

The invitation for participation, along with Airanespace, was sent to US companies, Space Exploration Technologies and International Launch Services, as well as Ukrainian Ukroboronservis.

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Communication and Information Technologies Ali Abbasov said earlier that by preliminary estimates the cost of the satellite launching together with the rocket launcher will make up some $200m.

“But after conclusion of the contract with the producer of the rocket launcher the cost may grow by 10-15%”, the minister said.

Earlier, Abbasov said “the main criterion is reliability”: “This is the first satellite of Azerbaijan and the first launching must be successful. The cost is going to the background”.

The general contract with the company-producer of the first satellite of Azerbaijan-Orbital Sciences Corporation (US) was signed in Baku on May 27. Under the contract, the satellite will be produced within 26 months since the signing day of the contract and launched to the geostationary orbit in July-August 2012.

The overall cost of AzerSpace is AZN 163m, including AZN 86-87m – the cost of the satellite, AZN 16,000,000 the main and reserve system of satellite management, preparation and launching a rocket into orbit and AZN 18m is 100% insurance.

The national satellite will involve a part of Europe and Asia. Azerbaijan will use only 20-25% and the rest will be sold. Currently negotiations are held in this direction. In particular, Malaysia has already given an order for purchase of 40% of AzerSpace resources.
