Russia will support Baku’s bid during election of the capital of summer Olympics 2020.

The statement comes from Izvestiya newspaper which refers to the Olympic Committee of Russia. It is done of solidarity-former USSR countries usually vote for each other and have long formed a kind of a ‘pool’ on interests as well as geographical viewpoint. It is more comfortable for Russian sportsmen to compete in comparatively familiar conditions.

In 2007 Azerbaijan was supporting Russia in elections of the capital of winter Olympics 2014.

Azerbaijan fully supported Sochi’s bid for hosting the winter Olympic Games”, Minister of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan Azad Rahimov told Izvestiya. Sochi’s bid inspired Baku for hosting summer Olympic Games 2016 and our current bid for Olympics 2020. We support close ties with Sochi 2014 steering committee and learned much from the experience of Sochi training. The support of the Olympic Committee of Russia and Russian representatives in OIC is one of the key factors for the success of our bid.

Izvestiya remind that five cities including Baku, Doha (Qatar), Madrid (Spain), Istanbul (Turkey) and Tokyo (Japan) bid for hosting Olympics 2020. The first presentation of the bids is to be held in Moscow. On 14 April, the 10-minute video presentations will be demonstrated to the participants of the General Assembly of the Association of the National Olympic Committee which involve the sport activists from 204 countries. Though the General Assembly of the National Olympic Committee has no direct vote in election of the cities, the opinion of the national Olympic committees is taken seriously by the International Olympic Committee in formation of the short-list of the candidate cities.

The list of candidates will allegedly be reduced from five to three-four cities at the session of the OIC Executive Committee in Canadian Quebec on 23-25 May. The selection will mostly depend on the presentations and whether the bidders could answer a special questionnaire sent to them last year.

- Most CIS countries will support Baku’s bid of corporate solidarity”, member of the press commission of the International Olympic Committee Alexander Ratner told Izvestiya. “But this can be not enough for Azerbaijani capital to win the right to host the Olympic Games 2020.

Currently, the CIS countries have only five votes of 106 in IOC-three votes of Russia and two of Ukraine.

- Inclusion into the short list of the candidate cities is the main priority to us”, Azad Rahimov said.  According to the minister of sport, Baku, as a bidder, has enough advantages.

- The climate in Baku is ideal for hosting sport events. We have wonderful places with a wonderful coastline. We are also ready to familiarize the guests with the rich history of our country. This is especially important that in period of financial instability, Azerbaijan’s economy is among the strongest and fast growing in the world.

The IOC will declare the winner of the bid for hosting 2020 Olympics in Buenos Aires on 7 September 2013.
