Singer Sabina Babayeva has been chosen as Azerbaijan's contestant in this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

She beat four other contenders to win the final round of selection last night in a show at the Heydar Aliyev Palace in Baku.

Sabina was chosen by a jury, made up of the director of Public Television, Ismail Omarov, singers Faig Sujaddinov, Rauf Babayev, Zulfiyya Khanbabayeva and Tunzala Agayeva, music professor Zumrud Dadashzade and a representative of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Menzer Nuraliyeva.

The song that Sabina will sing at Eurovision has yet to be chosen.

Her victory last night is a triumph for persistence as it is the fourth time she has competed to represent Azerbaijan at Eurovision.

"It so happened that I was born with a heart that loves to sing," Sabina said in an interview with the Azerbaijan News Network at the end of January.

She said she had been singing since she was a child,  first, in a children’s choir. After school, she went on to study singing.

Azerbaijan is guaranteed a place in the Eurovision final as the hosts of this year's contest.

The Eurovision semi-finals will be held on 22 and 24 May and the grand final on 26 May.
