Iran would like to increase imports from 2 billion to 10 billion cubic metres per year, an embassy spokesman told 1news.az.
"The Ministry of Energy and our ambassador have repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring Azerbaijani gas," the spokesman said.
Iran is ready to buy as much gas from Azerbaijan as a country can supply, he continued.
The spokesman's remarks echoed comments from the Iranian ambassador, Mohammad Baqer Bahrami, in February, who said then that "Iran is ready to purchase as much gas in Azerbaijan as the country is able to supply."
The embassy's comments today come as Azerbaijan and Russia sign an agreement on increasing Azerbaijan's exports of gas to Russia.
Earlier this year, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) and the National Iranian Gas Export Company (NIGEC) signed a short-term contract on supplies of Azerbaijani gas to Iran in Baku.
Azerbaijan sends 800,000 cu.m of gas to Iran for supply to the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan as part of a swap arrangement and 1.2 million cu.m of gas for Iran's own use.
Azerbaijan's state oil company SOCAR has already announced its he intention to build a new pipeline to export gas to Iran.
