Opposition bloc activists protest near Prosecutor General’s Office of Armenia

The activists of the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) bloc will hold a protest action near the building of Prosecutor General’s Office on Friday.

They would demand immediate release of ANC activists Tigran Arakelyan, Artak Karapetyan, Sargis Gevorgyan and David Kiramijyan who were sentenced to jail for using violence against authority representative.

Members of the ANC parliamentary group will also participate in the demonstration.

A clash occurred between the ANC activists and police officers on Aug. 9, 2011. Police detained 7 activists and instigated a criminal case bringing hooliganism charges and violence against authority representative. At the same time, the activists claimed that the police officers have severely beaten them. The First Instance Court sentenced Tigran Arakelyan to 6, Artak Karapetyan to 3, Sargis Gevorgyan and Davit Kiramijyan to 2 years in jail on July 20.

The ANC activists stated they will continue to gather in front of the Prosecutor General’s Office building every Friday.
