United States have promised to allocate $1 bn to Georgia.

The United States have promised to allocate $1 bn to Georgia, sources in the US embassy in Tbilisi said upon completion of the visit of US Assistant Secretary of State James Steinberg to the Georgian capital.

Before departing from Tbilisi, Steinberg said the last tranche within the framework of the financial aid promised to Georgia by US Vice President Joe Biden in the days of the August conflict of 2008 is currently being transferred.

According to the embassy, the aid has been distributed in four directions. In particular, $48.7 mln have gone to assisting to civil society development,  raising supremacy of law and independent court system, $436.9 mln have been redistributed for humanitarian goals.

$469.9 mln wee allocated to Georgia to ensure its economic growth including to develop electric and gas infrastructure, construct roads and assist to small businesses and agricultural development.

Another 48.1 mln was allocated for the needs of peace and security, in particular, for mine-clearing works, strengthening police, coastal guard and frontier security, raising Georgia's readiness to react to emergency situations, as well as combating transnational crimes, according to
