The observations prove the growing seismic activity in the Caspian Sea as compared to 2008.
Seismological center of Azerbaijan's National Academy of Science will open nine new telemetering stations to observe seismic activity, according to chief of the center Gurban Yetirmishli.
"Seven stations opened last year in Lerik, Saatli, Kurdemir, Khizi, Mingechevir, Gazakh and Zagatali. Seven more stations are expected to be established in Astara, Gedabey, Zardab, Guba-Khinalig, Gabala, Gusar and Gobustan. Two more stations will be established in Nakhchivan, thus, raising the number of telemetric stations in Azerbaijan to 30", Yetirmishli said.
He noted that the observations prove the growing seismic activity in the Caspian Sea as compared to 2008. Yet, according to him, this does not pose any special threat today.
He also said that last year 21 telemetering stations registered 1744 local, 1936 remote and nearby earthquakes including 20 of them tangible. He called the southeastern slopes of the Major Caucasus to be the biggest seismic zone, in particular, Shamakhi-Ismailli, as well as the Kura depression in the area of the Mingechevir water reservoir, areas in the south direction from Shamakhy. Meanwhile, the closing in epicenters was recorded in Jalilabad and Hajiqabul.
