USA in sympathy with Azerbaijani people over 20 January tragedy

The USA shares the Azerbaijani people's mourning on 20 January 1990, Donald Lu, US chargé d'affaires in Azerbaijan, said yesterday.

Twenty years ago the Azerbaijani martyrs "died for freedom", the envoy said.

He said that the tragic events had been covered at the time by leading US media, including The Washington Post and The New York Times.

Donald Lu said that the United States supports the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and is keen to strengthen partnership.

Soviet troops killed over 130 civilians on the streets of Baku on 20 January 1990.
