Eighty-four names were removed in 2009 from Azerbaijan's list of people missing as a result of the Karabakh conflict, a state commission has said.

The State Commission for Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing People investigated the cases of missing people in 2009.

"As a result, the fate of 84 people was cleared up. Their names have been removed from the list of missing people," according to the commission's report for last year.

Of the 84, 29 are alive, 35 died during military operations and were identified by their relatives and buried, the names of 13 people had been repeated and seven people had gone missing beyond the conflict area, the report said.

Another seven people were found to have gone missing during the hostilities and their names were included on the relevant list.

The State Commission systematized information about 117 Azerbaijani citizens registered as missing and sent this data to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

As of 1 December 2009, the State Commission listed 4,133 Azerbaijani citizens as missing and 1,396 as released from captivity.

The report says that 44 people registered as missing are alive and are probably in Armenian captivity in Azerbaijan's occupied districts.

Last year the State Commission sent requests for information about 567 missing citizens to different state bodies and international organizations.

Personal case files were opened for 983 missing persons.
