There are 85.6 mobile telephones for every 100 people in Azerbaijan, 25 more than the world average.

The number of mobile phone connections in Azerbaijan grew by 1.1 million in 2009, Azerbaijan's minister of communications and information technology, Ali Abbasov, told Monday's cabinet session on socioeconomic development in 2009.

"As a result, the number of cell phones per 100 people reached 85.6, 25 more than the world average," the minister said.

Abbasov said that Azerbaijani mobile communications operator, Azerfon, which operates under the Nar Mobile trademark, and international operator Vodafone had introduced 3G technology in Azerbaijan in December 2009.

"This event means that Azerbaijan's telecommunications market has entered a new stage of development. 3G services enable not only telephone conversations but also radio and television broadcasts, online video and other new functions," the minister said.
