Chief of the department for political analysis and information of the Presidential Administration Elnur Aslanov has commented on the rally held by a group of opposition organizations on 17 March.

“The rally which was sanctioned by the Baku executive power and held by a  number of youth organizations was yet another proof of the absence of social base of the opposition parties. For many years opposition political organizations have declared existence of the so-called ‘numerous protest electorate’ in Azerbaijan. They often referred to the absence of the due place for conduction of their actions. The opposition parties always explained their failure with the lack of conditions for holding the so-called ‘mass actions’ and thus tried to prove to the world community that the right for freedom of assembly is not observed in Azerbaijan.

The current action has demonstrated that these statements were untrue. First, the authorities allocated an area for holding these and next meetings. Second, the security of the action participants was ensured. Third, the initiators had enough time to arrange this event. However, the political action of opposition organizations brought no more than 250-300 people to the area allocated by the mayor’s office despite having been widely advocated in social networks and internet. This is yet another proof that modern Azerbaijani youth does not see the alternative to incumbent power among opposition parties”.
