Grigol Vashadze
Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze has asked his Lithuanian counterpart, Vygaudas UĊĦackas, to use a different name for Georgia.
He explained that "Georgija" is a historic name, whereas the name used now in Lithuanian, "Gruzija", is of Slavonic origin.
The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry press secretary said that the request did not come as a surprise to Vilnius.
Georgia's request will be passed to the Lithuanian state language commission, which will take the final decision on the issue.
