Azerbaijan recorded first HIV infection in 1987.
As of 1 December 2009, Azerbaijan officially recorded 2224 HIV infection carriers, said Hagigat Gadirova, chairman of the Anti-AIDS Center, at the conference on the World Day of Combat with AIDS.
She said of the recorded number 2138 (96.1%) are Azerbaijani citizens and 86 are foreigners.
"Among Azerbaijani citizens 1799 (84.1) are men and 339 (15.4%) are women. 448 people are at the stage of AIDS today", the center chairman said.
Gadirova said 274 people died of AIDS in Azerbaijan as of 1 December 2009.
"For the first time the HIV infection was revealed at an Azerbaijani citizen in 1992. Of all the HIV-infected Azerbaijani citizens, 634 (29.7%) live in Baku and Absheron, 1465 (68.5%) in other regions of the country and place of residence of 39 (1.8%) is unclear.
1375 people (64.4%) infected from drugs, 495 (23.2%) in the result of heterosexual contacts, 16 (0.7%) homosexual contacts, 20 (0.9%) cases of prenatal infection, 1 person (0.005%) in the result of blood transfusion. The origin of infection of 230 people (10.8%) is unknown".
