Azeri grand master humbles world’s second chess player

The World Blitz Championship involving Azeri chess players Vugar Hashimov and Shahriyar Mamedyarov kicked off in Moscow.

News.Az says 14 of the 42 rounds have already been played. By their results Hashimov is 14th with 6.5 points and Mamedyarov is 21 among 22 participants with 4 points.

Hashimov gained four victories and held five draw games in 14 rounds. Vugar managed to defeat German Arkadi Naidich, Hungarian Judith Polgar, Russian Eugeni Bareev and Norwegian Magnus Carlsen who was the second in FIDE’s rating.

As for Mamedyarov, he also won four games but did not hold a draw game. Shahriyar won over Ukrainian Ruslan Ponomarev, French Vladislav Tkachev, the same Judith Polgar and Russian Dmitri Yakovenko.

Indian Vishvanatan Anand that gained 12 points of 14 possible is on top. Magnus Carlsen has 10 points, Russian Anatoli Karpov coming third has 9 points. The world championship will continue today and end tomorrow.
