Azerbaijan's Press Council seeks the release of journalists who are in prison, council chairman Aflatun Amashov has said.

Amashov spoke to journalists on Monday about the  young activists Emin Milli and Adnan Hajizade, who were sentenced last week on charges of deliberately causing minor injuries and hooliganism. Milli was sentenced to two years and six months imprisonment and Hajizade to two years.

"We are carrying out research in this field and we will probably appeal to the relevant bodies before the New Year about the release of these journalists," Amashov said.

He said that the Press Council's work is primarily to protect the rights of print, not electronic media.

Amashov said that the Press Council deals with the problems of convicted journalists. The council has repeatedly approached the pardons commission and visits imprisoned journalists.
