New Azerbaijan Party

Women make up 30 percent of the candidates nominated for the local elections by the New Azerbaijan Party (YAP).

The YAP has successfully completed the first stage of preparations for the municipal elections on 23 December, Ali Ahmadov, deputy chairman and executive secretary of the party, said on Monday.

Ahmadov said YAP had acted in time to register most of its candidates.

"For this election campaign, the New Azerbaijan Party proposed an initiative to nominate mostly women and young people as candidates. Analysis showed that only 4% of members of municipal councils are women and 5.5% are young people," Ahmadov said.

"A different situation has emerged in these elections. Women made up 30% of the nominated candidates and young people accounted for approximately the same percentage. I think this is remarkable in the history of municipal elections in Azerbaijan."
