Thirty political parties to contest Azeri local elections

The deadline for the submission of documents by candidates in the Azeri local elections fell at 18.00 local time on 13 November, the Central Election Commission reports.

In all 35,076 potential candidates in 1,718 municipalities submitted their documents by the deadline. Of them, 34,699 passed the initial registration stage and were were given signature lists and other documents to be completed and submitted to the relevant district election commission. Of these, 32,032 candidates have submitted their documents and 28,515 have already completed registration as candidates.

Of the registered candidates, 14,506 have higher education and 5,900 are women.

A total of 9,253 registered candidates have no party affiliation while the remaining 5,253 represent 30 political parties.

Twenty-two political parties have officially applied to contest the election race and 19 of the parties have been registered by the Central Election Commission.

Some parties are not contesting the elections officially, but offer support to party members who wish to stand.

In the elections on 23 December 15,682 people will be elected to 1,718 municipalities.
