Dmitry Medvedev

Dmitry Medvedev delivered the Annual Presidential Address to the Federal Assembly on Thursday.

The Russian president accused Georgia of aggression and said new mechanisms are needed for strengthening teh European security.

Dmitry Medvedev
in his address talked about Russia`s economy, modernisation of the armed forces and also emphasized social issues. He talked about the North Caucasus problems as well and said Russia continues irreconcilable fight against terrorists. The president talked about foreign policy and security issues in the end of his speech.

`Sometimes we are reproached, that we have drawn up the new European security mechanism against NATO. This is not true. We do not develop our foreign policy against somebody, but we are not NATO members and a number of countries are not either. Serious decisions on strengthening the European security are needed to be adopted now. We need a new effective ground. If we had had this kind of institution able to stop the aggressor, Georgia would not have been impudent enough to undertake war against South Ossetia`, Medvedev said.
