Traces of dinosaurs who lived in the Mesozoic era approximately 100 million years ago, by preliminary estimates, have been discovered during field works in the Abasha river gorge in Martville region of Western Georgia.

According to paleontologist Vasiliy Gabuniy, the traces of two dinosaurs were revealed this summer by accident during the field practice of students and masters of the Institute to of Land Research under the Ilia University.

“We have revealed a well preserved trace of the grass feeding dinosaur nor far from the water fall and a three-finger wind dinosaur of a small size. Here we also found the shell of urchins and defined the period by these shells”, Gabuniya said.  

In turn, paleontologist Vyacheslav Chkhidvadze announced that the fragments of the dinosaur skeleton were revealed. “Also we have revealed the fragments of cerebral disks, initially we did not believe since the bone in the rock formation acquires the composition of the rock formation and preserves only its form, therefore, it is very difficult to differ it from the rock formation, but after the inspection, we have defined that we are dealing with the cerebral disk of a big reptile”, said Chkhivkadze.

Speleologist Amiran Jamriashvili who also took part in the expedition notes that only a fragment of the dinosaur skeleton was taken for the study.

The traces of dinosaurs revealed in the Martville region are not the first finding in Georgia of this kind. Traces of dinosaurs of the Cretaceous period were also found in Western Georgia, not far from the Satapliya cave.
