Iran 'has right' to choose nuclear inspectors

Tue 07 September 2010 | 06:45 GMT

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Chief Ali Akbar Salehi said the country has the right to pick inspectors.

Concerning the UN nuclear watchdog denial of Iran's justifications over expulsion of the two inspectors, Salehi said, "we have the right to choose inspectors, it is the right of all IAEA member states, the two inspectors that Iran refused to receive them had delivered unreal reports and the IAEA has accepted the issue but it refuses to admit it."

"We called for them to introduce two other inspectors and they did so, we have accepted the two inspectors," he told ISNA.

He also added, "the IAEA Director General's new report mainly stresses lack of any deviation in Iran's nuclear activities."

"We believe that other issues mentioned in the report are secondary subjects."

Meanwhile, regarding the question that Iran has not allowed the IAEA inspectors to visit its heavy water facility, he said, "inspecting the facility is neither specified in Iran-IAEA agreement nor in the Safeguards, the agency should tell us based on what article of the mutual agreement it can visit the heavy water facility."

Salehi continued, Iran would allow inspections if the agency could prove the issue.

Also regarding the issue of alleged studies raised in the IAEA Chief Yukiya Amano's report on Iran, Salehi said, "ElBaradei (Amano's predecessor) had declared in his reports that evidence over alleged studies were not genuine, but we see the issue is exaggerated in Amano's recent report."

"At least they tell us that they have believed genuineness of the evidence and deliver us the original documents, so that we are ready to examine them."

He added, "we feel that political pressures have started to affect the IAEA."
