The import of cars to Azerbaijan has fallen 36% in 10 months of 2009, State Customs Committee chief Aydin Aliyev told journalists on Wednesday.

"The decline in car imports led to a fall in payments to the state budget of Azerbaijan, as the committee made 89.73% of the forecast payments to the budget in the year to October," Aliyev said.

Looking on the bright side, he said that the fall in car imports would be beneficial for the environment and help to reduce traffic jams.

Several years ago the Customs Committee proposed restrictions on the import of old cars. “We also adhere to European standards of car import that ban the import of old cars,” the customs chief said.
