Fatal shooting in Azerbaijani mosque

One man was killed and another wounded when armed men opened fire in a mosque in the southern Lenkoran District.

The incident occurred at 00.15 local time today  (19.15 GMT on 2 September) in the village of Gumbashi, APA news agency reported.

Armed men arrived in the village in several vehicles from the direction of Masalli District to the north. They opened fire from Winchester rifles on villagers who had gathered in the mosque. Gumbashi resident Elshad Alimammad oglu Huseynov, born in 1963, was killed and another villager, Ramin Baloglan oglu Agamaliyev, born in 1985, was wounded.

Ramin Agamaliyev is in intensive care in the Central District Hospital in Lankaran. Doctors describe his condition as satisfactory.

Two men have already been arrested over the attack, Lenkoran Police Department told Novosti-Azerbaijan news agency, but declined to name them.

The police are continuing the search for the other attackers.

The Lenkoran District Prosecutor's Office has opened a criminal case on the incident.

The southern districts are known as drugs smuggling routes from Iran.
