Pomegranate is a unique fruit, specific for the nature, culture and cuisine of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan is the only country in the world, where all sorts of pomegranate are planted while Goychay is a center of growing this culture in the country.

Nevertheless, Armenian nationalists are already claiming to turn this fruit into the symbol of Armenia, according to the news service for the Ireli public union.

Therefore, there is a need to propagandize the pomegranate as a civilized heritage of the world, for example, by means of the annual agricultural fruit and vegetable fairs held in Europe and North America.

Meanwhile, considering the fact that the popularization of pomegranate in Azerbaijan is restricted with the local level, while international audience is left beyond this information, Public Union “Center of Development of Goychay” in cooperation with the Club of Assistance to Development of Civil Society (Turkey)  have started preparation of the festival of pomegranate in Goychay scheduled for 1-8 November 2010.

A memo of intention to assist this project between the leadership of both aforementioned nongovernmental organization was concluded in Turkish Erzurum in April 2010.

The project will be held within the framework of assistance to goodwill social initiatives of the youth and will involve over 50 young people from seven nongovernmental organizations of Azerbaijan, Turkey, Russia, Georgia, Romania and Italy.

The project is also supported by the EU youth program, EU directorate on educational and youth programs and Agency on State Planning of the Turkish government.

The name of the project is “One world-thousands of nations”, with pomegranate its symbol.

Also, among the organizers of the project is the Ireli public union and executive powers of Goychay, Sport and Olympic center of Goychay, AzNar and Goychay Sud.

The detailed presentation of the project will be held at the Center named after Heydar Aliyev in Goychay on 6 September 2010.
