Seyran Ohanyan

Armenian Defence Minister Seyran Ohanyan has said that fatal clashes on the contact line yesterday were the result of a foray by Azerbaijani troops.

He described as misinformation a report from the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry that the clashes were the result of Armenian attacks on Azerbaijani positions.

The Armenian minister said that Azerbaijani soldiers had conducted the forays.

A spokesman for the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh republic's defence ministry, Senor Asatryan, told Armenia Today that a third Azerbaijani soldier had died from wounds received in the clashes.

Asatryan said that at least 10 people had been in the Azerbaijani sabotage group and that they had carried their dead and wounded back with them over the contact line.

Asatryan said that one soldier had been wounded on the Karabakh side, Rudik Manaseryan, and that he was in a satisfactory condition. He said the Armenians had suffered no loss of life.

The Azerbaijani Defence Ministry reported that two Azerbaijani soldiers were killed in the clash yesterday when Armenian provocateurs attacked positions near the village of Chayli in Terter District.

Azerbaijani soldiers resisted the Armenian attack. Three Armenian servicemen were killed and several others wounded in the close fighting, the ministry said.

Armenian Defence Minister Seyran Ohanyan said that the army was fulfilling its main objective, despite recent violent incidents in different military units.

He said that some army units were at the right level in terms of conditions and could be compared with the armies of most countries.

He said that despite Azerbaijani "sabotage", the security of the country's borders was at the appropriate level.
