Armenian Defence Minister Seyran Ohanyan said today that no additional Russian military bases were planned in the country.
He was asked to comment on how the 5,000-man base in Gyumri would ensure the security of all Armenia's borders.
"The opportunities for the Russian base in Armenia to ensure the country's security remain vague," Armenia Today news agency commented.
The recent protocol extending the term of the Russian base at Gyumri also included a provision, according to which Russian servicemen would ensure Armenia's security alongside Armenian forces.
The protocol meets Armenian interests, the minister said.
He said it would allow the further development of "capacities to resist threats through a personnel corps united with Russia".
The minister said that the Russian base in Gyumri was going through a reorganization with structural and functional changes being made. "After the reforms, we will carry out together the provisions of the protocol," the minister said.
