President Ilham Aliyev hopes that Baku, the capital city of multinational Azerbaijan, will once be declared a capital of European culture.
“This year Baku has been declared the capital of Islamic culture. This is a great honor for us. I hope in the coming years Baku will also be declared the capital of European culture”, Aliyev said at the international conference on interreligious dialogue held in Baku Friday.
The President said the fact that the conference was held in Azerbaijan, famous with its tolerance, is by no means an accident. “Azerbaijan has never had any conflicts on national or religions basis”, he said.
According to Aliyev, Azerbaijan, along with being loyal to Islam values, is a member of most European organizations and few of such countries may claim that the nations residing there live as a single family.
The head of state said Azerbaijan constructs and restores not only mosques but also orthodox and catholic temples and synagogues. “This is an important component of our policy”, he noted.
While speaking in the conference, I.Aliyev stressed contributions of head of the Caucasus Muslims Department Allahshukur Pashazade in development of interreligious dialogue and granted him the Shohret award.
