Washington to host conference on Turkey

Turkish-Azerbaijani relations and the Karabakh negotiating process will be discussed at a conference in Washington this week.

The conference, Turkey's New Geopolitics: Challenges and Opportunities, is being organized by the Centre for Turkish Studies at the Middle East Institute.

The keynote speakers are Dr Ibrahim Kalin, chief adviser to the Turkish prime minister; Namik Tan, Turkish ambassador to the USA; Dr Suat Kiniklioglu, deputy chairman of Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP); and Omer Celik, deputy vice president of the AKP.

Leading Turkish journalists and Professors Metin Heper from Bilkent University’s Department of Political Science and Ergun Ozbugun from the Faculty of Law will also attend the conference.

The State Department’s principal deputy assistant secretary, Nancy McEldowney, who has worked in US embassies in Baku and Ankara, and prominent analysts Steven A. Cook, Hasib Sabbagh and others will take part in the discussions.

The main topics for discussion will be Turkey’s relations with Iran, Israel and Iraq, Turkey’s relations with Azerbaijan and Armenia, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and Turkey in transition.
