Villagers from Hashimkhanli in Sabirabad District today protested outside the Presidential Administration in Baku about unpaid compensation.

The villagers, who lost their homes and livelihoods in the floods this spring, say that the promised compensation has not yet been paid to them.

The Presidential Administration refused to talk to the flood victims and sent them to the Ministry of Emergency Situations. At the ministry they were told to put their complaint in writing, villager Zohrab Khamzayev told a Turan news agency correspondent.

“We don't even have money to send our children to school. Under the president's order, initial compensation should have been paid. No-one has been able to get hold of this money yet. The rules have been broken in the distribution of compensation too. Only after complaining to the prosecutor's office have any sums been paid," Khamzayev said.

He said 12,000 hectares of arable land was lying useless, as the villagers no longer had the equipment to prepare the land for sowing.

"The authorities don't help us and this means that people will have no means of subsistence,” the villager said.
