Azerbaijan welcomes Iran's proposal to mediate on the Karabakh conflict, Foreign Ministry spokesman Elkhan Polukhov said today.

'Baku welcomes the initiative expressed by Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki in Tehran to mediate between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,' Polukhov said.

'Azerbaijan supports the proposal of Iran, which has often taken part in the negotiating process. Moreover, Tehran has always recognized the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan,' he continued.

Polukhov said the date and place of the proposed meeting between the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan, Iran and Armenia was not yet known.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told a press conference in Tehran yesterday that Azerbaijan had accepted the Iranian proposal of a meeting of the three foreign ministers. Tehran was still waiting for Armenia's response, Mottaki said.
