Azerbaijan could easily give up genetically modified foods, according to an official from the National Academy of Sciences.

The expert council on bioethics of the National Academy of Sciences' Human Rights Institute held a session today on the problem of GM products in Azerbaijan.

Institute Director Ayten Mustafayeva said the council had prepared a comparative analysis of the Azerbaijani law on food safety with similar laws in Turkey, Russia, the EU states, Ukraine and elsewhere.

She said the council had concluded that Azerbaijan hardly prohibits the use of these products which posed a threat to the gene pool.

Mustafayeva said that several European and CIS countries had banned the use of GM products. Even 26 developing countries in Africa had imposed a veto on the use of these products, making a strategic choice for the protection of their gene pool.

She said Azerbaijan could easily reject GM products because it was able to support its nine million population. 'The aim of our initiatives is to achieve a ban of the use of such products in Azerbaijan,' she said.
