Ban Ki-moon

Peace in Georgia should be maintained by existing mechanisms, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said at the Echo of Moscow radio studio.

On journalist’s question ‘Who did you support in the 2008 August war?’ Mr. Ban Ki-moon answered the UN tried to maintain peace in the region.

‘We were carrying out discussions with Russia, the EU and the UN before the war. These negotiations still continue to maintain peace in the region. Recently I even appointed special representative of the UN for Geneva negotiations’, Ban Ki-moon said.

On question whether time has come or not for deployment of UN troops in Georgian districts adjacent to conflict zones, the Secretary General said peace should be maintained in the region by troops enjoying the mandate for being deployed there.

‘The Geneva negotiations are discussing a mechanism for maintaining peace in the region without UN troops’ existence there’, the Secretary General said, adding some progress has been achieved in this regard.
