Teodor Baconsky
'No one forced Romania to agree to the location of the US missile defence system on its territory,' Baconschi told a press conference in Baku on Thursday after meeting his Azerbaijani counterpart, Elmar Mammadyarov. 'We took the decision as a sovereign state and a NATO member. We are confident that this project will increase Romania's security and show our country to be a reliable partner.'
He said that the system was defensive and did not target third countries.
Baconschi said Romania supported close cooperation between Azerbaijan and NATO. 'Nevertheless, the decision to participate in the global system of anti-missile defence is the sovereign right of Azerbaijan. No one forced Romania to host these missile defence elements and there was fierce competition in Europe for the right to host these elements,' the Romanian minister said.
