$2bn invested in Azerbaijan's transport sector

The world financial crisis has shown the importance of international cooperation on transport, Azerbaijan's transport minister said today.

He was speaking at the second session of the working group to develop road cargo transportation between Afghanistan and the South Caucasus.

'The country is working at developing all economic spheres. In particular, $2bn has been invested in the country’s transport sector,' Mammadov said.

According to Trend, Mammadov said Azerbaijan was working actively to improve transport infrastructure, with work under way on the construction or reconstruction of highways. Azerbaijan is also involved in the project to create a new Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway which will promote the development of the Europe-Caucasus-Central Asia transport corridor, known as TRACECA.

Mammadov said that the world financial and economic crisis had underlined the importance of cooperation between international transport organizations and financial institutions on developing the transport sector.

TRACECA involves Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Moldova, Romania, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Ukraine and Iran.
