Russian patriarch invites Armenian church leader to Baku

Thu 18 March 2010 | 15:29 GMT

Patriarch Kirill has invited the catholicos of all Armenians, Garegin II, to attend the second interreligious summit of CIS countries in Baku.

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church made the invitation in his own name and on behalf of Azerbaijan's spiritual leader, the head of the Caucasus Muslims Department, Allahshukur Pashazade.

'I have conveyed the invitation to His Holiness to come to Baku in order to express his position on the important issues that will be discussed there. I think our openness, which has nothing to do with weakness, loss of national consciousness or traditional religious identity, can change much in this world and allow the world to see the face of the Christian church,' the patriarch said while meeting staff and students at Yerevan State University.

The second interreligious summit of the CIS countries is organized by the Interreligious Council of CIS States and will be held in Baku in April.

The patriarch also said that the Armenian Apostolic Church and the Russian Orthodox Church were actively involved in a resolution of the Karabakh issue.

'Our goal is to create the right atmosphere for people to stop seeing everyone virtually and to understand that their joint future depends on their joint efforts,' the patriarch said.
