Russian youth movements to hold rally in Moscow

Wed 17 March 2010 | 11:56 GMT

Major Russian youth organizations will hold a mass rally to announce their federal projects in downtown Moscow on March 31.

Triumfalnaya Square is also the site for monthly Marches of Dissent held by the Other Russia coalition, an umbrella group for opposition parties, on the 31st day of those months that have one.

"We will have a rally in which nearly all the major youth movements will take part. Around 5,000 people are expected. Each movement will present its project," Young Russia movement leader Maxim Mishchenko said, adding that the projects would be concerned with social welfare issues.

He said the movements to participate in the event were the pro-Kremlin Nashi (Ours), The Young Guard of United Russia (MGER), the Russian Union of Rural Youth, the New People, and other movements.

MGER applied for a permit to stage the rally on February 27.

Mishchenko said he was aware they would not be the only protesters on the square that day, arguing that "the opposition should learn about youth projects and channel their energy in the right direction."

Last year, the Young Russia movement declared the last day of each month the Day of the Donor, with the headquarters on Triumfalnaya Square.

Mishchenko added that "it would be great if [Eduard] Limonov [a well-known opposition writer and activist] donated his blood."
