60 hothouses have been constructed in the territory of Agdam.

For the purpose of settling problems of employment and improvement of living conditions of internally displaced persons, the UN food and agricultural organization is building hothouses for the farmers of this category in Agdam.

According to head of the program Oqtay Gulmaliyev, 60 hothouses have been built in the territory of Agdam within the framework of the pilot project. For this purpose, the food and agricultural organization of UN selects local organizations that choose successful farmers and hold seminars and trainings for them on planting agricultural crops in the hothouses.

According to Gulmaliyev, the leading farmers are chosen not by UN but by the residents of the settlement: “They appoint him the group leader. There are about 15 farmers in each group. They agree to set a hothouse on the section of the leading farmer. This hothouse remains the property of the organization within three years and is used as an experimental section by all members of the group”.

According to the head of the program, seeds and fertilizers are also supplied to farmers free of charge. In case of the effective use of the hothouse, the seasonal gains may top AZN 1,500-2,000. Gulmaliyev said the expenses for such hothouse make AZN 500.

The project is implemented under financial support of the Swiss Organization of Development and Cooperation and the Azerbaijani government. The second stage of the project planned to complete by June 2012 started in June 2009.
