"The normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia will have a positive impact on the development of the region."

The EU is interested in normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations and will contribute to this process, said plenipotentiary of the European Commission in Armenia, Onno Simons, speaking at the Rose Roth seminar of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Yerevan.

According to him, the normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia will have a positive impact on the development of the region. He noted that the South Caucasus is of great interest for Europe and its role is growing daily. In particular, it is related to the EU funded projects to diversify energy and communications. "Interest in the region is displayed by serious European players, as well as Russia and Iran, in connection with which we are interested in the prosperity of the region", said Simons. In this context, the unresolved conflicts and closed borders are contrary not only to the interests of the region, but also of the EU. He noted that the EU cannot admit a country with unresolved conflicts. Karabakh conflict can turn into a military confrontation any minute. "This also refers to Turkey in connection with the Cyprus issue", he stressed.
