2185 drug users were identified in Azerbaijan last year.
Total number of drug addicts is 23 927. Five of them are under 17 and 498 – women.
The number of HIV-infected people increased up to 2265 until January 1, 2010, said head of working group of the State Commission on Combating Drug Use and Trafficking Araz Aligliyev at the meeting dedicated to the outcomes of the year.
About 2 500 kg narcotic drugs were confiscated last year and 2741 people were brought to justice for drug charges. Aliguliyev said it needed to take more preventive measures in the secondary schools.
Chairman of the State Commission on Combating Drug Trafficking, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov said the number of drug users reached 24 000 in the country and 42 % of them are the residents of Baku.
