Azerbaijan is to ask the UN to include the route Afghanistan - Iran - Nagorno-Karabakh on a list of new routes for drug trafficking.

Ali Hasanov, deputy prime minister and chairman of the State Drug Control Commission, announced this at a meeting of the commission today.

Three routes for drug trafficking through and near Azerbaijan are listed by the UN at present:

1. Afghanistan - Iran - Azerbaijan
2. Afghanistan - Pakistan - Iran
3. Afghanistan - Central Asia - Azerbaijan

'Azerbaijan is going to ask the UN consider to include a new route Afghanistan - Iran - Nagorno-Karabakh, the territory which now remains outside the control of both Azerbaijan and the international community as a result of the Armenian occupation,' Hasanov said.

Hasanov said that the occupied areas of Azerbaijan were used for the cultivation of narcotic drugs and training camps for armed militants and terrorist groups. Azerbaijan has repeatedly called on international organizations to respond to this situation, but so far no response has followed, Hasanov said.

'How can there be territories without any control in the modern world?' Hasanov asked. He said this was probably in the interests of 'mafia groups' in international organizations.
