Event on Azerbaijan-German relations held in Baku

An event on "Azerbaijani-German relations in terms of South Caucasus" has been held in Baku.

Germany builds its policy with the South Caucasus countries and with Azerbaijan on several levels-political, economic and culture.

The statement came from German ambassador Per Stanchina who spoke at the Center of strategic studies under the Azerbaijani president on March 11.

He said Germany and Azerbaijan maintain stable and developing relations. "Frequent visits can be listed among examples of good relations. German RWE and the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan signed a memo yesterday.

Azerbaijan is actively cooperating with Germany on the parliamentary level", he said.

The diplomat also spoke of the economic relations between the two countries.

"The trade turnover between the two countries has recently grown. In 2006 it made $1.6 bn against 3.5 bn in 2008. In 2009 the trade turnover dropped to 2.25 bn due to economic crisis. We support the development of free market economy in Azerbaijan. Germany currently supports twinning of six projects in energy, standardization, metrology and statistics", the ambassador noted.

Ambassador said that Germany establish relations with Azerbaijan on 3 main strategic targets.

'We want Azerbaijan to continue its way on the basis of Europe values. It is the main strategic goal of our relations with Azerbaijan. We also want stability in South Caucasus, it will help to reveal the potential of a region'.

Azerbaijan country with great economic potential in the region. " Stanchina said that the third target is cooperation in energetic sphere, to ensure energy security of Europe.

'Europe depends on energy resources. The duty of each country is to free from this dependence. Azerbaijan helps us in this work. Azerbaijan pays 5 percent of Europe's energy need. We support energy security. We support energy security. But there is such opinion in public as if we interested only in energy resources of Azerbaijan. But it isn't so. But it is not so. We also interested in the development of economy, democratic values, municipalities, small and medium entrepreneurship'.

Stanchina noted that Germany allocated 70 million dollars grants to Azerbaijan for execution of different programs during these years.
